BEHIND THE CUP

About

Founded in 2019, Grassfield Co-op  is a cooperative of coffee producers based in the western part of Cameroon in the areas of Foumbot, Bamenda, Mbouda and Bafoussam. It specializes in the production of high quality coffee.

This fully washed lot includes a 24-36 hour fermentation and after washing, the coffee is sun dried on raised African beds for around 7-8 days (or until 12% moisture is achieved).

Over 80% of coffee grown in Cameroon is robusta. But in the western highlands around Mt. Oku, the altitude, volcanic soil, and diverse micro-climates create something different: conditions ideal for arabica.

Grassfield Co-op, founded in 2019, brings together coffee producers from Foumbot, Bamenda, Mbouda, and Bafoussam to specialize in high-quality arabica production. They're working in a region where most coffee is grown by smallholders, where centralized milling remains common, and where a half-million acres are devoted to coffee farming despite low yields from aging trees.

In recent years, the Cameroon government has sought to revive the coffee sector. Grassfield Co-op is part of that work—proving that arabica can thrive where robusta dominates.

This fully washed lot includes a 24-36 hour fermentation. After washing, the coffee is sun dried on raised African beds for 7-8 days until it reaches 12% moisture. That extended fermentation window and slow drying create the complexity this coffee carries.
